The world’s greatest seasoning, beer, is one of the easiest things to cook with. Using beer to marinade food, such as mutton, chicken, and seafood, can tenderise them. In addition to being a beverage, it has been used as a table companion for centuries. Food is basted or layered with beer before roasting, baking, or broiling. Beer imparts a dark colour to the food and highlights the gravy when roasted, baked, or grilled.

Beer is unsurpassed as a liquid for baking. Adding it to biscuits, cakes, and homemade breads adds lightness and buoyancy. Reconstitute fresh or frozen foods using beer and package mixes.

While cooking, the alcohol in the beer evaporates, leaving behind a delicate taste that will intrigue foodies. As an alternative to water, beer is used over the simmering liquid to enhance the rich flavours of the meat and vegetables.

Using Beer in your recipes makes them more entertaining, based on research and trials. There’s no need to wait; quit drinking and start cooking today.

Beer & Cheddar Fondue

Ingredients
  • 4 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup beer
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons ground mustard
  • 1/4 teaspoon coarsely ground pepper
  • Radishes, sliced apples and breadsticks
Directions
  • In a large bowl, combine cheese and flour. In a small saucepan, heat the beer, garlic, mustard and pepper over medium heat until bubbles form around the sides of the pan.
  • Reduce heat to medium-low; add a handful of cheese mixture. Stir constantly, using a figure-8 motion, until almost completely melted. Continue adding cheese mixture, 1 handful at a time, allowing cheese to almost completely melt between additions. Keep warm. Serve with radishes, sliced apples and breadsticks.

Soft Beer Pretzel Nuggets

Ingredients
  • 1 bottle (12 ounces) beer
  • 1 package (1/4 ounce) active dry yeast
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 4 to 4-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 10 cups water
  • 2/3 cup baking soda
Topping
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • Coarse salt, optional
Directions
  • In a small saucepan, heat beer to 110°-115°; remove from heat. Stir in yeast until dissolved. In a large bowl, combine butter, sugar, salt, yeast mixture and 3 cups flour; beat on medium speed until smooth. Stir in enough remaining flour to form a soft dough (dough will be sticky).
  • Turn dough onto a floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic, 6-8 minutes. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease the top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour.
  • Preheat the oven to 425°. Punch dough down. Turn onto a lightly floured surface; divide and shape into 8 balls. Roll each into a 12-in. rope. Cut each rope into 1-in. pieces.
  • In a Dutch oven, bring 10 cups of water and baking soda to a boil. Drop nuggets, 12 at a time, into boiling water. Cook for 30 seconds. Remove with a slotted spoon; drain well on paper towels.
  • Place on greased baking sheets. In a small bowl, whisk egg yolk and 1 tablespoon water; brush over pretzels. Sprinkle with coarse salt if desired. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from pans to a wire rack to cool.
Freeze Option
  • Freeze cooked pretzel nuggets in airtight containers. To use, thaw at room temperature or, if desired, microwave on high for 20-30 seconds or until heated through.

Simple Sweet ‘n’ Tangy Pork Chops

Ingredients
  • 1/4 cup beer
  • 4 teaspoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 2 bone-in centre-cut pork loin chops (3/4 in. thick and 7 ounces each)
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • Dash pepper
  • 1 tablespoon canola oil
Directions
  • Mix beer, ketchup and brown sugar. Sprinkle pork chops with salt and pepper.
  • In a large skillet, heat oil over medium heat; brown chops on both sides. Add beer mixture to pan; bring to a boil.
  • Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, until a thermometer inserted in pork reads 145°, 1-2 minutes. Remove chops from pan; keep warm.
  • Return sauce to a boil; cook and stir until slightly thickened. Serve over pork.

Entry Deadline Extended to March 14, 2022 Due to COVID

Reaching a milestone, the Craft Beer Marketing Awards (CBMAS) expands its worldwide judge’s panel to include over 500 industry professionals from over 24 countries.

“We’re excited to welcome more than 500 judges from all around the world to this year’s panel, all professionals in brewing, marketing, design, and beyond,” said Jackie DiBella, CBMAS Co-Founder. “We appreciate their volunteer support to visually critique and rank the entries,” Jackie added.

Well-known Judges who have returned or joined include Ralph Steadman, David Carson, Zane Lamprey, Jon Contino, Matt Furman, Harry Schuhmacher, Megan Stone, and Keith Villa, among others.

“I’ve watched the Craft Beer Marketing Awards rise so quickly to prominence and am honoured to participate as a judge alongside top contributors from the beer community,” said Tara Nurin, independent beer/spirits journalist and author. “As a female writer who has studied women’s involvement in the beer world, I appreciate that the CBMAS recognizes the achievements of creative and influential women in the industry,” she added.

Due to the recent COVID Omicron surge, the CBMAS has extended their 2022 awards season entry deadline to: March 14, 2022.

“While entries poured in from all over the world, many have recently asked for more time to get their entries in due to COVID-related staffing issues and delays. We totally got it, so we moved the entry deadline to Valentine’s Day. Happy Valentine’s Day to beer lovers worldwide,” said Jim McCune, CBMAS Co-Founder.

The CBMAS is now in its third season. Founded in 2019, this is the only global awards competition to recognize and celebrate the importance of craft beer marketing and design as a key to success in this highly competitive marketplace.

The CBMAS expanded its industry significance as a leading expert in marketing trends with the presentation of a marketing seminar at the 2021 Craft Brewers Conference, as well as, by recognizing influential beer industry movers with their “Industry People of the Year” Awards.

And, as a way to make its voice literally heard, the CBMAS has launched a podcast, Marketing on Tap, sponsored by EGC Group.

Entries are open to anyone involved in marketing within the brewing industry around the world—including cider, hard seltzer, mead, and brewery-produced RTD Cocktails. Breweries, their agencies, artists, and marketing partners are all invited to enter their top work.

The 2022 CBMAS encompasses over 40 categories that cover all aspects of brew marketing—from labels to logos and tap handles to taprooms. New categories have been added by popular suggestion, and returning this year are the “Sustainability–Environmental Awareness” and “Human Rights” categories.
The CBMAS’ judging process is a robust, credible, and transparent digital scoring system that’s ranked by an influential and respected worldwide panel of more than 500 beer, marketing, and design experts.

The CBMAS’ presenting sponsor—for the third year in a row—is Hillebrand, the world’s leading global beverage logistics company. Prabh Hans, VP of Domestic Services for Hillebrand North America—headquartered in Houston, TX—was a strong supporter from the start.

“It’s awesome to see how the CBMAS have grown,” said Hans. “What an amazing platform, connecting brewers around the world, and celebrating their creativity. We can’t wait to see who is awarded a prestigious Crushie award as recognition for their passion-fuelled work this year!”

A new 2022 CBMAS Gold Sponsor is Arryved, based in Boulder, CO, which specializes in point- of-service for craft breweries, restaurants, and other craft destinations.

“We see creativity across this industry every day – and it just keeps getting better. We’re excited to be a part of the CBMAS this year to help celebrate those who are continuing to come up with innovative ways to get their brand name out there,” said Alex Ostler, Head of Marketing, Arryved.

Many design companies and agencies are taking notice and submitting their work. This truly underscores the CBMAS’ focus on the growing importance of creative art and design in packaging and brand building as marketing tactics for brewers to stand out in today’s ever- growing and competitive marketplace.

Chicago, IL-based INX, an international ink company, has returned as a sponsor this year.

“As an integral part of the metal decorating and packaging industry, INX International is excited to be a part of the CBMAS,” said Sarah Jacks, Manager, INX Colour Perfection®. “What a fantastic way to give recognition to the talent that so many brands have brought to the craft market! We can’t wait to see the impressive branding, designs, and hard work that this year’s applicants bring to the competition!” Sarah added.

The awards celebration will take place during the week of the 2022 Craft Brewers Conference in May in Minneapolis, MN. For additional information and continued updates, visit craftbeermarketingawards.com.

This interview is a part of a continuing series of interviews with the Brewers of the beer brewing community from across the World. Brewer World will share business and personal insights from Brew masters, Head Brewers, Brewing Managers each week to help build the industry network and consumers understand beer well.

This week, the Brewer talking to Brewer World is Satyam Awasthi, Head Brewer, The Pump House, Bengaluru.

Excerpts….

You make beer for a living. How cool is that?

I do make beers for a living. Indeed it’s a super fantastic job because I really enjoy it. I am kind of an artist who understands the science behind Brewing. A guy like me who never settles for less, crafting beer is a perfect job where permutation and combination of the recipes are endless.

How do you describe what you do?

Every beer comes with a recipe that includes a selection of malt, hops, yeast, and water profile. After that is how to execute it as per the brewing facility, looking after the fermentation process, and once the beer is ready, how perfectly it should reach the consumer. So you may say, I take care of the journey of grains until it is called ‘beer.’

What does your work entail?

A privilege and entailed part of this job is ‘Beer Tasting’. I do beer tasting almost every day to make sure beers are being served fresh and flavourful. So, one should be aware of beer faults too.

How did you start your career in the beer industry?

While pursuing my postgraduate programme, I explored the working culture and scope in the distillery, blending units, winery, and microbreweries. And what I observed in these mega production units is that there is not one person who will hold hands and take the time to guide me as per my skill sets. Craft brewing is a growing industry and the process gets me excited.

Tell us about yourself.

I am blessed with a great sense of humour, and a very easy-going person. I enjoy talking about beers, new beer trends, and all that I can offer to the craft beer community. And I am a big-time foodie who loves exploring new cuisines.

What do you like about what you do?

After a long brew day, enjoying my favourite beer is the best part of my job.

Is there something that you dislike about being a brew master?

Genuinely, everything comes with pros and cons, so there is nothing I can say expressly about disliking anything being a brew master.

What is most rewarding as a brewer?

The most rewarding thing as a brewer is when people really enjoy the beers I brew, especially for a new recipe. After putting my heart and soul into a recipe and the process, if someone appreciates it, that is the best feeling in the world I guess.

You have a degree in Fermentation technology. Could you tell us about it?

Fermentation is the soul of any kind of alcoholic beverage. Just that we manipulate it as per our requirements. During my fermentation technology course, I studied fermentation in the dairy industry, molasses-based distilleries, grain-based distillery, winery, brewery, and baker’s yeast production. In addition, I intensely learned about the biochemistry of yeast and other microbes.

How do you come up with new beer recipes?

Inspiration for the new recipe can be drawn through even a small talk. It could also be guest suggestions, local ingredients, sometimes we come across something interesting while travelling, or also while playing around with the favourite malt or hops. Sometimes I would just want to see the behaviour of any specific yeast and a new recipe is formed.

Which is your favourite Brewery and beer?

I am very fond of Rauch. Schlenkerla from Bamberg makes the best Rauch I have ever tried which makes it my favourite brewery too. If there is an award for the Best Brewery In India, my vote goes to Doolally, where I learned how to be true to the beer style.

Who do you look up to in the industry?

I like to appreciate the beers more than to appreciate the person who made it because it will be made for a particular reason. You need a team to make a good beer. I believe in learning from everyone in all possible ways. Definitely, my career is phenomenal because of the people who guided me, especially Doolally’s team, with whom I spent over four years.

Have you read about the Brewer Who doesn’t drink beer yet?

Chris Jacobs and Candace L. Moon voted Craft Beer ‘Industry People of the Year’ by the CBMAs global judge panel

Craft Beer Marketing Awards (CBMAs) announced its ‘Industry People of the Year’ awards for the 2021 award season, which concluded recently. The CBMAs awards season begins each September. ‘Industry People of the Year’ awards are voted on by the global panel of CBMAs judges each year at the end of each awards season.

Chris Jacobs of Beer Zombies Brewery in Las Vegas, Nevada, and Candace L. Moon of Craft Beer Attorney in San Diego, California, were chosen as the 2021 CBMAs’ ‘Industry People of the Year’ by their peers.

“We’re proud of the work that Candice and Chris have achieved in the craft brewing industry, and excited to see more than 300 of their peers provide recognition in the form of voting them in as this year’s award recipients,” said Jim McCune, Co-founder of the CBMAs. Jacobs and Moon will each receive a special global level ‘Person of the Year’ Crushie trophy—the iconic trophies of the CBMAs, manufactured by the same Manhattan-based awards firm that creates high-profile entertainment industry awards that include the Emmy, Golden Globes and MTV’s “Moonman.” The “Crushie” award is sculptured to depict a heavily-tattooed arm crushing a beer can as a representation of how breweries are “Crushing It” with their unique and creative beer marketing, branding, and design.

“Beer Zombies have been built on two mottos since day one,” Jacobs said. “The first: ‘A rising tide lifts all boats.’ Being voted by my peers to receive this award goes to show the craft beer community is always looking to lift each other up and goes hand in hand with that philosophy. The second motto I live by is: ‘To drink awesome beer with awesome people.’ Craft beer is built by passion, love and people, so here’s a virtual cheers to every awesome person involved. Look forward to sharing an awesome beer with as many people as I can. Cheers!”

“I am completely surprised and honoured to receive this award from my CBMA fellow judges,” Moon said. “Thank you so much!”

The CBMAs recognize over 30 beer-marketing categories that celebrate the best in craft beverages. Hillebrand supports the CBMAS mission to honour individuals and teams who use innovative and creative marketing, branding, fine arts, and design to promote beer industry growth. In its 2021 season, the CBMAS extended into judging hard seltzer, cider, and mead. New categories were added, and the awards competition was expanded internationally. The entries were judged by a global panel of over 300 craft beer professional industry judges.

“We had an incredible panel of beverage industry experts from across the globe this year,” said Jackie DiBella, Co-founder of the CBMAs. “Candace and Chris should be so proud to be nominated into the position of CBMAs’ ‘Industry People of the Year’ by their peers! We’re looking forward to working with an even larger global judges panel for the 2022 CBMAs awards season.”

Chris Jacobs, founder of Beer Zombies

Chris Jacobs is a craft beer ambassador and creator of the Beer Zombies brand. Beer Zombies has evolved to include a merchandise line, draft rooms, bottle shops spread across three states, and a worldwide distributed brewing company.

Chris has received numerous awards and recognitions in the craft beer industry, which include having been voted “Craft Beer Ambassador of the Year” for the state of Nevada. With hundreds of podcast, news, and print appearances, he continues to spread the motto of Beer Zombies: ‘Craft Till Death,’ with a mix of dark can art and zombie themes.

Candace L. Moon, ESQ., Partner, The Craft Beer Attorney, APC

Since 2009, Candace L. Moon, Esq. has actively served over 450 craft beer breweries (which include breweries-in-planning) across the nation. She discovered the need for specialized craft beer counsel while working as a bartender at world-famous Hamilton’s while attending law school in San Diego, California. She is in demand as a guest speaker for brewers’ guild and association meetings and craft beer conferences nationwide on matters that include distribution laws and trademarks to ensure clients and breweries-in-planning are complying with industry standards and regulations. She has been featured in newspapers, magazines, television segments, and online content throughout her remarkable career.

Candace received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia and her juris doctorate from Thomas Jefferson School of Law in San Diego, California. She served on the Board of Directors for Pink Boots Society and San Diego Brewers Guild. Traditionally, Pondicherry has been a sunny, sandy place with a laid back culture that suits its fun-loving spirit of beer. In addition to fine breads, cheeses, and chocolate, European influence added another level of flavour. In addition, the new Catamaran Brewing Company, which was unveiled on Saturday, 25th September ’21, is a welcome addition to Pondicherry’s beer scene. First Craft Brewery In Pondicherry. It is now possible to enjoy a wide selection of unique craft beers in the eclectic city’s chill space.

“Vanakkam Pondy” reads the introductory flyer. This reflects the founders’ dream to open a craft brewery in a Tamil-speaking state. The Catamaran Brewing Company, the first Brewery In Pondicherry was launched to present locals and tourists with the taste of locally crafted international beers… Beers that stand out in flavour from mass-produced ones and are paired with the finest gourmet foods!

The story behind

First Brewery In Pondicherry, the Catamaran Brewing Company, was launched 25th September, 21. Its founding fathers, Ranga (Rangaraju) and Prasad (Durga Prasad), made the decision to begin from this point after a long and determined journey. Prasad was working for a Fortune 100 tech company when he decided to take up home-brewing as an interest. As a result of his experience at Blackstar Brewing in Austin in 2016, he was immediately hooked. Prasad decided to quit his job, return to India, and become a brewer. “Due to its proximity to Chennai, I immediately thought of Pondicherry as the perfect beach destination,” he says.

Meanwhile, Ranga built on his passion for food by opening a restaurant called Sicilys at the Beach Promenade in his hometown of Pondicherry.

Prasad and Ranga reconnected in 2016 and the Catamaran Brewing Company was born as a result. However, the journey was not easy. Prasad returned to Chennai from the U.S. in 2017 and started knocking on government doors asking for a license to start a craft brewery. Pondicherry finally had its maiden microbrewery policy after several years, then came the designing, sourcing, and the actual establishing of the microbrewery, which were also hampered by the pandemic.

Beer and Food

Catamaran’s Head Brewer, Suryakant Singh, adheres steadfastly to CBC’s ‘craft with commitment’ credo to provide guests with the best craft beer experience possible. CBC uses imported malt and hops to give the ales their structure, while using fresh ingredients from the local market, such as oranges and coriander, to create a truly local taste.

Shatbhi Basu, who runs STIR: Academy of Bartending, guides CBC with a range of mocktails, smoothies, and pouring liquors that will be available.

Some of the Beers on tap are:

Indian Summer (Belgian Witbier)

The perfect summer beer with its large collar of white foam, CBC’s Indian Summer is a refreshing citrus flavoured clean beer with hints of coriander and chamomile.

Pondy Pils (Helles Lager)

Helles is a beer for beer lovers. Great for a stuffy day, CBC’s Pondy Pils is an earthy, balanced, light-bodied, subtly sweet pilsner.

Yuri G’s Drink (Porter)

CBC’s Yuri G pays tribute to a London brewer, who created a fresh brewed ale that quickly became known as the ‘Working man’s pint of choice’ in 1722. Wood smoked malt adds the smoky depth to this dark beer that echoes the original flavours of caramel, molasses and coffee.

Chingari Cider (Dry Apple Cider)

A true cider, CBC’s Chingari Cider is made with apple juice and is gluten free. Surprisingly heady for a cider (ABV 4.5), this drink comes with a sweet and tart flavour akin to a bite into an apple.

Vox Populi

A dark lager that’s a Rauch and Brown Ale hybrid.

Hopsunami

An Indian pale ale.

Chef Koushik Shankar, better known in his TV Food Judge avatar as the ‘Mad chef’, is behind the finger licking culinary dishes that provide a fitting accompaniment to CBC’s craft beers. The modern South Indian, Pan-Asian and Continental cuisine at CBC is a fusion fare created by the ‘mad chef’ in his own special style. Fare includes Vazhakai Nachos with Mango Salsa, Beer Rasam Panipuri, Podi Fried Idli 2.0, Masala Ratatouille Onigiri, Theepori Wings, Kallumari, Kadugu Eraa, Dimsums, Baos, Spinach Lasagne, Burgers, and Michelin Star Dessert Concepts.

Is Puducherry about to witness a craft beer revolution thanks to Catamaran Brewing Company? Possibly. For now, though, it is the only place where all ages can enjoy a meal while those above the legal drinking age can enjoy craft beer from a range of local breweries.

We wish all well to the Catamaran Brewing Company, the First Brewery In Pondicherry

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has passed a final order against three beer companies for indulging in the cartel-isation of sale and supply of beer in various States and Union Territories in India, including the platform of All India Brewers’ Association (AIBA), informed the Ministry of Corporate Affairs.

The three beer companies are United Breweries Limited (UBL), SABMiller India Limited (now named Anheuser Busch InBev India Limited after being acquired by Anheuser Busch InBev SA/NV), and Carlsberg India Private Limited (CIPL). AB InBev India was the only beer company amongst the three that was not charged a fine.

“Giving the benefit of reduction in penalty under the provisions of Section 46 of the Act of 100 percent to AB InBev and its individuals, 40 percent to UBL and its individuals, and 20 percent to CIPL and its individuals. The CCI directed UBL and CIPL to pay penalties of approximately Rs 750 crore and Rs 120 crore respectively, besides passing a cease-and-desist order,” reads the release by the ministry.

“We can confirm that the CCI has passed the judgment. We are currently reviewing it with our lawyers and have no further comments at this point,” said the Spokesperson of Carlsberg India to Brewer World.

A fine of over Rs 6.25 lakh has been imposed on AIBA, and the regulator has also fined various individuals. The period of cartel-isation was considered from 2009 to at least October 10, 2018, with CIPL joining in from 2012 and AIBA serving as a platform for facilitating such cartel-isation since 2013. Each beer company requested a lesser penalty before the regulator. The CCI also held AIBA to violate competition law since it was actively involved in facilitating such cartelisation.

“We are examining the order and will decide on the further course of action,” said the Spokesperson of United Breweries Limited to Brewer World.

Speaking about the fine to Brewer World, the Spokesperson, AB InBev India, said, “We are pleased with the outcome of this order and the opportunity to contribute to the competitive environment in India. The CCI decided that we were the sole company identified as receiving no penalty whatsoever and noted that we had “initiated internal definitive corrective administrative and HR measures” as well as “initiated widespread compliance programs for its employees.” We are pleased with these comments as we take compliance and ethics very seriously.”

In October 2017, CCI ordered its investigation arm DG to conduct a detailed probe, which keeps an eye on unfair business practices across sectors. Suo Motu, the regulator, brought the case after Crown Beers India Pvt Ltd and SABMiller India Ltd, both eventually owned by Ab InBev, applied under Section 46 of the Competition Act against UBL Carlsberg India and AIBA.

Section 46 pertains to lesser penalty provision. The companies were engaged in price coordination in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Odisha, Rajasthan, West Bengal, National Capital Territory of Delhi, and Union Territory Puducherry. Besides, they were found collectively restricting the supply of beer in the states of Maharashtra, Odisha, and West Bengal and in sharing of the market in the State of Maharashtra as well as coordination concerning the supply of beer to premium institutions in the city of Bengaluru,” the release said.

The Kolkata-based Celebrity Breweries plans to invest more than Rs. 100 crore in the West Bengal beer market, according to a publication. In addition to owning its own brands, the company is a leading contract manufacturer of beer for major beer makers like the World’s largest brewery Anheuser-Busch InBev and United Breweries.

“The company has plans of investing more than 100 crore in the West Bengal beer market. Investment in upgradation of the equipment related to improve quality checks and automation to match global brewery standards,” Celebrity Breweries Chief Operating Officer, Vishal Kumar said.

To provide the breweries in West Bengal with an impetus in accordance with the company’s needs and the consumers’ preferences, the government has been strategic and supportive. After conducting a sufficient inquiry, the Excise Commissioner has permitted the manufacture of non-alcoholic malt beverages having alcohol strength no higher than 0.5% v/v that are 0.88 degrees proof on brewery premises in the latest state excise policy. This is the first time a non-alcoholic beer policy has been introduced by the Bengal Government. By incorporating Rule 117B into the state excise policy, not only will the brewery business be boosted, but also government revenue will be higher.

With a market worth 28,000 Crores of beer, the Government of India’s NAB (Non-Alcoholic Beer) policy will support Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative and Local for Vocal initiatives. The upstream sectors of the manufacturing process within India will be able to capitalize on the value creation resulting from this process. In West Bengal, the NAB policy will result in further investment and economic activity growth around the Celebrity Brewery along with increased capacity utilization.

“Introduction of NAB policy being a first-of-its-kind in India will help global companies to come with more investment towards west Bengal. Currently the entire demand for NAB is being met completely through imports and not being manufactured within India,” Kumar said.

“We are going to set up the first de-alcoholizer module in India. This model is being imported from Sweden and ₹50 crore is being invested in this module along with peripherals,” he added.

The company is also planning to build a foreign liquor manufacturing facility in West Bengal and is negotiating with other major players in the market to manufacture premium and super premium foreign liquor brands.

Samuel Adams, a Boston-based brewery, releases a new version of its Utopias limited-edition beer every two years. This high-gravity beer may be too expensive for many people to drink, but the alcohol content is the main reason it won’t be on shelves in 15 different States.

Those 15 States

A news broadcast reported that this year’s Utopias has an ABV of 28 percent, which makes the product illegal in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Idaho, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, Utah, Vermont, and West Virginia. Every state sets a limit on the amount of alcohol allowed in beer, and Utopias exceed those limits with ease.

The supply of Utopias for this year is “extremely limited”, according to Samuel Adams. In all, CNN estimates that only 13,000 bottles were produced, and each oversized 25.4-ounce bottle has a suggested retail price of $240.

“We pioneered the barrel-aging and blending process of Utopias almost thirty years ago and continue that time-honoured tradition today,” Jim Koch, the founder and brewer of Samuel Adams, said in a statement. “Since the introduction of Utopias in 2002, brewers have explored uncharted territory with each brew, experimenting with different kinds of aging barrels, new flavours, and different blending techniques. The result is always special, spirited, and worth waiting for,” he added.

With the latest Utopias, the brewery combined batches of what it calls its “extreme beers,” including some that were aged nearly 30 years in bourbon barrels. A total of 86 barrels were used to age this blend, including those previously used for red Carcavelos, red Madeira, red Ruby Port, red Sherry Oloroso, and sweet Sauternes. The brew was also finished with a lot of black cherries, which added sweetness and tartness to the brew. According to the product’s description, “the final product has a rich taste of black cherry and dark fruits with hints of maple and vanilla.”

All For Charity

Moreover, Samuel Adams has announced that it will be the official beer of Inspiration4, the first private, all-civilian space flight to orbit the earth. Inspiration4’s 38-year-old commander Jared Isaacman wants to raise $200 million for the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Samuel Adams has said that it will donate at least $100,000 to the charity.

A bottle of this year’s Utopias, signed by Jim Koch and the entire Inspiration4 crew, will be auctioned on Charitybuzz to raise money for the cause. The winning bidder will also receive round-trip airfare for themselves and a guest to Boston, a tour of Samuel Adams Boston Brewery, and a two-night stay in Boston. The Utopias for this year will be available from October 11.

With great power comes great responsibility and the world’s leading brewer AB InBev lives by this ethos. As it works towards its purpose of Bringing People Together for a Better World, AB InBev has launched the Global Smart Drinking Week this year to drive positive impact through Smart Drinking initiatives, reigniting its commitment to making every experience with beer a positive one. In 2010, AB InBev initiated the Global Be(er) Responsible Day, a global initiative where dozens of countries, hundreds of organizations and thousands of people come together to promote the idea of responsible alcohol consumption. In their continuous commitment to bring that culture to communities, they are now dedicating a week to reiterate this commitment to consumers, commitments and colleagues. Through the first Global Smart Drinking Week (GSDW), AB InBev aims to champion specific behaviours and social norms that encompass Smart Drinking — both internally and externally.

Brewer World had the pleasure of interviewing Anasuya Ray, Vice President Corporate Affairs, South Asia on the launch of GSDW and what it means for AB InBev. Read on as she shares her insights on the need to champion Smart Drinking and responsible alcohol consumption.

What is Global Be(er) Responsible Day?

At AB InBev, we are committed to fostering a culture of Smart Drinking, and we believe that as the world’s leading brewer, we have a unique opportunity to make a wide-scale impact in our communities. Smart Drinking plays to the strength of beer as the natural choice of the Smart Drinker.

We celebrated the first edition of Global Be(er) Responsible Day in 2010 to improve consumer and public awareness about Smart Drinking and pave the way for positive changes in people’s lifestyles while preventing any harmful effects of alcohol consumption.

Over the last decade, GBRD has evolved into a movement and a call to action to our entire stakeholder ecosystem with a focussed message of inculcating responsible alcohol consumption in their everyday life.

Achieving a vision of a global culture of Smart Drinking necessitates a change in consumer behaviours around the harmful alcohol use. Leveraging our reach and network, we continue to promote behaviour change to champion Smart Drinking. In 2015, we launched our Global Smart Drinking Goals (GSDGs) to deepen our commitment to implement effective and collaborative solutions to reduce the harmful use of alcohol. Aligned with the United Nations and the World Health Organization, our GSDGs move beyond awareness-raising to drive real impact for the communities in which we live and work.

Smart Drinking has become a part of our company culture, and as we continue to strive to bring that culture to communities, we are introducing the Global Smart Drinking Week to celebrate our progress and reiterate our commitment.

Tell us about the evolution of GSDW and what this means for AB InBev.

Our first GSDW this year aligns with the first week of the United Nations General Assembly. Through GSDW, we seek to raise awareness for AB InBev’s Smart Drinking initiatives, build pride and a sense of community among our colleagues and consumers as leaders in this effort, turn our colleagues into champions of the behaviours and social norms that embody Smart Drinking and re-ignite our commitment — personally as employees and collectively as a company, for years to come. At AB InBev, we want every experience with beer to be a positive one.

AB InBev believes that every experience with beer should be a positive one. How do you plan to make sure this message reaches beer drinkers?

We take our responsibility to help reduce and prevent the harmful use of alcohol around the world seriously , and we put this at the centre of everything we do.

This commitment extends far beyond saying “drink responsibly”. It spans our Global Smart Drinking Goals, the work of the AB InBev Foundation, the commitments of our brands, and the behaviours that we ask our consumers to practice and colleagues to champion every time they pick up a beer.

Over the years, our messaging on practising smart drinking behaviours has evolved into few key areas:

  • Hydrating between beers.
  • Eating between beers and.
  • Pacing consumption of beers – to avoid binge drinking and.
  • Designating a driver- to avoid drinking and driving.

This social messaging is in line with our Global Smart Drinking Goals that aim to influence social norms and individual behaviours to reduce the harmful use of alcohol. In a pre-COVID era, our colleagues worldwide stepped out of their offices and breweries to champion responsible drinking behaviour with our consumers, customers, and communities. With the pandemic setting in 2020, we approached the campaign through a digital lens.

How are you celebrating GSDW this year? What is the theme?

At AB InBev we believe that Smart drinking is smart business as it is good for our consumers and communities. We contribute to reducing harmful drinking by embedding Smart Drinking in everything we do – from our marketing initiatives to our innovation pipeline.

Over the past year and a half, a lot has changed with how we live and work, how we interact, our social routines, and even our eating and drinking patterns. Now more than ever, promoting moderate alcohol consumption and discouraging the harmful consumption of alcohol is fundamental.

At this GSDW, AB InBev champions the many specific behaviours and social norms that encompass Smart Drinking, both internally and externally. AB InBev  has partnered with leading national restaurant chains to raise awareness on responsible alcohol consumption and encourage consumers to follow our guiding behaviours to inculcate a culture of smart drinking – hydrating between beers, eating between beers, pacing the consumption of beer, and designating a driver.  We have initiated a week-long employee engagement initiative to reinforce our smart drinking beliefs further and lead by example. Encouraging employees to become smart drinking ambassadors, we have raised the pitch a notch higher this year by gamifying our campaign and gratifying colleagues with exciting prizes.

What do you do beyond GSDW to spread the message of responsible alcohol consumption?

We are striving to go beyond traditional corporate social responsibility to create shared value for businesses and communities. Recently recognised by Jefferies as the alcohol company with the most comprehensive, technology-driven Smart Drinking portfolio, our 360-degree initiatives include policies & codes, goals, resources & toolkits that enable our colleagues and brands to champion responsible alcohol consumption. We empower consumers with more choice by offering No- and Low-Alcohol Beers and encourage better alcohol consumption patterns. AB InBev is integrating Smart Drinking messages of smart drinking into our marketing strategy, and for years, we have been committed to producing, market, and selling our products responsibly. To achieve our ambitious goals, we partner with public health experts, governments, and organizations to help us change behaviours and social norms in our communities at the grassroots level.

We are firmly committed to going the extra mile to ensure we imbibe responsible behaviours with our consumers, colleagues and that every experience with beers is a positive one.

Is South Bangalore the hotspot for Breweries in Bangalore? I do feel so, because of the number of breweries in South Bangalore. Bengaluru people love to drink Beer, and we cannot agree more because of more than forty breweries here. The city has long been known as the country’s pub capital, but visitors may not realize it has long been a hub of India’s thriving IT sector. In addition, Bangalore hosts a wave of independent microbreweries and a thriving, independent craft beer scene, unlike Mumbai and New Delhi, which host swanky watering holes that stay open until the wee hours (not now due to Covid restrictions anymore). With many options around Bengaluru, we bring you the Beer Holes in South Bangalore, which seems to be the brewery capital of Bengaluru, with breweries on every three roads.

South Bangalore’s best beer joints offer inventive pints infused with fruits, spices, or traditional grains, infusing them with flavours hard to find elsewhere. Find some good brews in Bangalore by heading to these spots.
