Delhi welcomes Lone Wolf, a new beer brand. The brand offers a premium beer drinking experience, targeting strong beer drinkers who account for 85% of the market in India. The brand is committed to bringing its consumers quality beer at competitive prices. Lone Wolf holds a true personality; free-spirited, free-willed, and charting an outward journey, the beer has launched in Delhi and Haryana.

A homegrown product of Onkara Beverages & Hospitality Pvt. Ltd. Lone Wolf is less bitter and made of high-quality malt. Lone Wolf Bev is starting with two variants, Lone Wolf Strong which has launched in Delhi/NCR and Lone Wolf Mild Lager which will be launching in mid-June, 2022. The strong variant has a high ABV, low bitterness and a smooth flavour profile whereas the Mild Lager has a dry and crisp flavour profile.

From Left Narender Sharma Manager-Finance, Arijit Ghosh, VP Sales, Atul Kumar Singh, Managing Director.

During the Launch in Delhi/NCR, Managing Director Atul Kumar Singh said, “We are very excited to launch in Delhi/NCR, our brand believes in celebrating free-spirited, free-willed and free-flowing individuals. Ones who have chalked out their journey and have carved their niche path, are an inspiration to others rather than following the same route. We at Lone Wolf invite all those who want to become a part of the beginning of counter-culture. It symbolises those who want to Unplug from trends, unlock their mind, unleash their primal instincts and unfollow the crowd.”

Due to the beer culture in the country, Lone Wolf Bev was created to celebrate the concept of counter-culture and to create a community for its style of drinking, taste, and way of living. Its long-term objective is to build a strong brand name by brewing quality beer and simultaneously looking towards the beginning of a “counter-culture,” where the brand would be associated with “unrestrained and unabashed last men standing”. As a brand that levitates toward going against the norm, it is setting the tone toward becoming a trend.

“Here at Onkara Beverages, we are trying to create a brand (Lone Wolf) known for its quality and affordability to maximise customer reach. Our target audience is essentially everyone who drinks beer or wants to drink good beers. We have started sales and distribution in Delhi and Haryana, while Chandigarh, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh will follow soon after. We aspire to have our footprint all over North India within the next two fiscals and then travel across the country. We plan to add a variety of flavours & rich beers to our portfolio every year. Next in line is the plan to launch LABs and RTDs which currently occupy a very exciting space in the Alco-bev industry. Looking forward to the prowl” says Vice President Sales, Arijit Ghosh, said during the launch.

This will be the first such foray in the Alcobev industry for a company with long-term plans to enter other segments like other LABs (low alcohol beverages), and RTDs (ready to drink) in their second phase. With plans to increase their footprints in North India over the next 2 years they will soon launch in Punjab, Chandigarh and Himachal Pradesh followed by UP and Uttarakhand.

  • First-of-its kind circular packaging intervention re-purposes surplus barley straw
  • New intervention uses 1/3rd of water compared to traditional technologies, helps prevent approximately 1400 KG CO2 emission / ton of packaging produced
  • Increases farmer income by commercialising barley straw which otherwise has limited commercial benefit
  • This environment-friendly packaging reaffirms Corona’s commitment to protect and preserve nature
  •

Today, global beer brand Corona announced the launch of a new 100% biodegradable and compostable six-pack made from 100% barley straw in India. This new circular form of packaging reaffirms Corona’s larger goal of protecting and preserving nature. Corona’s new six-pack made from 100% barley straw aligns with this year’s World Environment Day theme of ‘Only One Earth’, focusing on “Living Sustainably in Harmony with Nature”.

Eco-packaging has been at the forefront of many consumer conversations in India, with increased knowledge of social concerns over waste, climate change, and carbon footprint reduction. The Corona six-pack, made of 100% barley straw, is as durable as regular packaging. This eliminates the need for using virgin wood from trees and other resources while tying back to Corona’s commitment to protect this beautiful paradise around us.

“Ever since its inception, Corona has been synonymous with the outdoors and has had a deep connection with nature. We believe it is our responsibility to protect and preserve it. After in-depth assessments across our supply chain, we wanted to first start with revamping our packaging and making it sustainable. Today is an immensely proud day for us, as we launch the future of packaging which is made from 100% Barley waste. We are honoured to introduce an intervention that speaks to Corona’s mission of protecting the environment by reducing waste and truly being a global responsible brand”, said Vineet Sharma, Vice President – Marketing, South Asia, AB InBev.

With circularity at the core of this innovation, Corona works with Barley farmers in India to buy leftover straw that is often the cause of crop burning, a critical issue in North India, to manufacture these 100% biodegradable compostable six-packs. By commercializing barley straw, farmers receive an income for crop waste that otherwise has limited marketable benefits. Converting barley straw to packaging uses 1/3rd of water* compared to traditional technologies. Additionally, introducing such eco-friendly packing helps reduce crop burning and prevent approximately 1400 KG CO2 emissions/ton of packaging produced.

Adding to the benefits of launching this packaging, Ashwin Kak, Head – Procurement & Sustainability, India & South East Asia, AB InBev, said, “At AB InBev, we constantly challenge the status quo and push boundaries to deliver solutions that are sustainable, innovative, and scalable. We are proud to provide a truly circular innovation through up-cycling that offers a meaningful experience to our consumers while giving our farmers an added means of income through these Corona six-packs made from pure barley straw. This is also a vital step towards achieving our larger global goal of ensuring that 100% of our product packaging will be returnable or made from a majority of recycled content by 2025. At AB InBev, our dream is to create a future with more cheers, and we are proud to invest in sustainable solutions that positively impact the environment and our communities.”

Corona has worked with Craste, a green, sustainable packaging company, to develop this circular and scalable technology. AB InBev and Craste have been working towards developing this technology for more than three years.

Commenting on this innovation, Dr Himansha Singh PhD, Co-Founder, Craste, said, “We are excited to provide industrial-scale circular solutions to organisations committed to moving away from fossil-fuel reliant materials and thus reducing the impact on the environment. With this packaging, we have not only saved trees but have also helped farmers by giving them secondary income for barley waste. AB InBev’s early support and partnership have been pivotal for us, which helped us within labs and gave us a solid foundation for commercialising our tech from bench to shelf!”

The new packaging is currently being piloted in Bangalore and once completed successfully, it will be rolled out to other states in India. AB InBev, the makers of Corona and other globally loved brands like Budweiser, Hoegaarden etc., has established strong goals for packaging. The launch of this innovation with Corona is a milestone in AB InBev India’s journey to eco-friendly solutions.

Bira 91, the world’s fastest growing premium beer brand, in collaboration with Far Yeast Brewing Company, one of Japan’s most innovative brewing companies, today, launched its first Gose style beer, Yuzu Gose Sour. Traditionally, a Gose-style beer is a wheat beer which features low hop bitterness and refreshing crispness.

The ‘Yuzu Gose Sour’ has been brewed from a combination of flavours of Himalayan Pink Salt sourced from India and the peel of Yuzu, a traditional Japanese citrus fruit cultivated in Japan’s Kochi Prefecture region and is used to make Kagua – a popular Japanese ale. The ingredients make for the perfect sour beer experience, a style popular in both countries.

Commenting on the collaboration, Deepak Sinha, VP, Marketing, Bira 91, said, “We are extremely excited to partner with Far Yeast Brewing Company, and launch the Yuzu Gose Sour, a beer that is a unique blend of Indian and Japanese flavours. This collaboration brings together Bira 91 and Far Yeast Brewery’s passion for experimenting with new beer styles and our brewers’ relentless pursuit to continue innovating and bringing diverse flavours to consumers.

We are both the leaders of this new world. I wish that this cross collaboration will be the first step to elevate the unique craft beer culture in the new world.”

The beer is dropping at the Bira 91 Limited Release Taproom in Koramangala, Bangalore today, 2nd June 2022.

Imagined in India, Bira 91 aspires to bring flavourful beers to the new world. This marks the actor-comedians first venture into entrepreneurship.

Vir Das, India’s biggest and globally the biggest Indian comedian is now all set to soar our spirits even higher. This time alongside his comedy bits on stage, one will now be able to enjoy a light and crisp beer called Faaaakit, which is being brewed and distributed by one of India’s most innovative craft breweries – Great State Aleworks.

The team along with Vir, spent over a year to find the perfect blend of flavours before the final brew was locked in. The marriage between stand up comedy and a good time over a beer go hand in hand, making this a perfect collaboration and a perfect step into an entrepreneurial journey for Vir. Currently the beer will be available across Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore and Hyderabad. In terms of a flavour profile, the beer is a clean, crisp and easy drinking beer with low bitterness and a fruity and dry finish.

Vir said in a statement, “Our motto was to spread happiness. And after a maybe stressful day you might want to literally say FaaaakIt and have a can of beer to unwind yourself. Also we wanted the beer to be for everyone, far often brands tend to alienate beer drinkers like the younger demographics or even women, and we wanted this to be for everyone. The team at Great State Aleworks and I spent a good deal of time finding a flavour profile that can be enjoyed by all”.

We have seen beer brands that sponsor sports shows and events. In Fact many sports, especially cricket, are associated with beer. For the first time in India a beer brand Copter7 was born inspired by a cricketer, MS Dhoni. It is unlikely that anyone who has even a dim awareness of India’s cricket obsession hasn’t heard about MS Dhoni’s illustrious career. Thousands of people in the stadium and all around the world became ecstatic when he played his signature Helicopter shot.

Mohit Bhagchandani’s Copter7 beer celebrates the legacy of MS Dhoni, as well as the passion for cricket. Mohit who was a sports manager, now is the founder of 7InkBrews. The packaging and labelling on the Copter7 beers are designed to mimic MS Dhoni’s different jerseys and their colours, another noteworthy feature. The distinctive aspect of the brand is the fact that it is the first brand built around a person’s personality and attributes. Brewer World got an opportunity to speak with Mohit Bhagchandani about the brand and its future. Below are the excerpts…

Could you tell us about 7InkBrews and Copter 7?

7Ink Brews was founded by me along with my co-founders Adil Mistry and Kunal Patel. We launched last year amidst the second wave in April 2021.

This brand is for dreamers, for people who have stars in their eyes, grit in their teeth, and determination in their hearts. It’s for the ones who push themselves to new heights, redefine their boundaries, and prove the naysayers wrong. All the while, whilst staying true to themselves. They may trip and fall, they do however, get back up and running. This one is for the winners. This one’s for you.

7Ink Brews’ ethos is to celebrate victory, passion, and innovation. I believe everyone is made for success and nothing less. After launching Copter7’s range of commercial beers and artisanal chocolates, we are ready to take our journey a step further. We will soon be launching a range of Copter7 Zero beers, inspired by India’s top cricket champion, MS Dhoni, and his winning spirit. The idea is to make Copter 7 everyone’s companion along an exhilarating ride.

Didn’t you take a risk by launching the brand during COVID?

It certainly was a risk. While the beer industry in India is fast evolving, it is also extremely competitive and has its own set of regulations. The situation turned all the more complex during the pandemic. It led to tremendous delays and operational challenges and created market uncertainty. It impacted our launch plans, our production cycles went for a toss, and we have also been personally affected in some way or the other. Moreover, setting up anything from scratch is always difficult, and a brand of this magnitude also has its own set of challenges. It has taken us many years to put this together and finally get our products on the shelves. Despite the odds, we are focusing on the opportunities. We missed the season in year one but still went ahead with what we had set to achieve and are certain that the effort will eventually bear the desired results.

You started your career as a sports manager, and now you have started your own beer brand, tell us about the journey.

I began my career in sports marketing in the early 2000’s. Later, I also worked in key roles and headed the sports marketing divisions at various agencies.

Somewhere along the road, I wanted to find a way to merge my two lines of interest: sport and building brands. For most  of us, watching certain sports and enjoying an adult beverage go hand in hand. Beer tops the list of preferred  drinks. That’s essentially how 7InkBrews was born. You’ll find this sporting spirit reflected in everything we do, starting with food and beverages. This is what makes our brand unique and exciting.

How do you connect Copter 7 with sports?

For me, it’s the love of sport and a passion for high-quality food and beverages that I behold. It has always been my dream to merge sport along with food and beverages into one unified, compelling brand, which led to the launch of the brand Copter7. The brand is inspired by legends and gets its name from MS Dhoni’s iconic “Helicopter Shot” and his Jersey number 7. We thus felt it was a beautiful fit and makes our brand story quite unique.

MS Dhoni is the brand ambassador for Copter 7, how did you make that happen?

MSD has been a part of the brand since its inception. It’s because he believes in the product and what it stands for. The idea of building a brand from scratch and the vision of creating something inspirational out of India and taking it to the world has always excited him. He believes in our vision, DNA, and brand philosophy.

With a profound passion for sports and interest in the FnB industry – Copter7 is a brand that captures the essence of both. The planning has taken over three years, and MS Dhoni has been part of every step, where the objective was to create something iconic that Indian consumers could connect with. We want to build a brand that is authentic and becomes a go-to choice for consumers. We obviously have plans to expand and go international.

Copter7 embodies the heart and drive of a champion, what sets legends apart from the rest?

Every brand has a story and this is our story. It is the spirit that makes these legends that inspire us – something that is core to our brand DNA. The idea is to celebrate the indomitable spirit and the will to achieve your dreams despite all odds. It’s a mantra that resonates with achievers like MS Dhoni.

What styles of beer do you have and plan to launch?

We have on board a good mix of craft and commercial beer experts that have worked out exciting formulations for each of our categories. We have currently launched two variants in our Premium segment and one in our Select range.

We also have exciting plans in the pipeline. The Smooth lager (mild) and Premium Strong (Marzen lager) are under the premium category. Select was just launched in September 2021. The select category will comprise stronger variants that will cater to the palate of the masses in tier 2 and 3 markets. In the premium segment, we will also be venturing into the craft segment starting with a wheat beer. We will also be exploring the non-alcoholic beer segment with two fruit-based flavours.

Will Copter7 be exported to other countries?

In the near future, yes we plan to expand internationally in the US and UAE.

How important is packaging for a new brand?

Very important, I must say. Packaging is a reflection of the brand ethos and how it is perceived in the market.

Where do you see Copter 7 in the next 5 years?

Our focus has been on building trade and ensuring retail visibility. We aim to be unique in our space by creating a good-quality product at an affordable price.

Our vision for the next five years is to build a brand inspired by India and take it global, while having a massive impact on the Indian market.

Founders Adil Mistry, Mohit Bhagchandani, and Kunal Patel.

Tell us about the zero beer?

After launching our commercial beers, we wanted to venture into the non alcoholic segment. Created with fruit pulp, natural fruit extracts, and a burst of flavours, the Zero Beer variants are available on the shelves of select Nature’s Basket stores. The beers are classic examples of blending flavours derived from premium quality malts, fruits, and other ingredients which make for a great and refreshing summer drink. Copter7’s Zero Beer is a premium non-alcoholic drink imported from the German brewery into India.

Priced at Rs 140 a pint, the premium beer, available in cherry and chokeberry flavours, leaves you refreshed. Chokeberry, also known as Aronia, has a strong earthy flavour. Apple concentrate adds a dash of sweetness to this. Cherry, on the other hand, has an inherently sweetish taste and tinge. These drinks can be paired with a variety of food items.

Women in brewing is a topic that has a long history. From the facts that are to be believed, women are the ones that were responsible for the invention of beer. After a while when men started dominating the industry it was very tough for the females to even think of entering, because Beer was said to be something that only men drink and make. From inventing beer, being beer goddesses, being the disenfranchised brewesters to working in the modern brewing industry, women have now been asserting themselves in every aspect of the beer industry.

In India, where women drinking beer is still a taboo, the tribe is now spreading its wings in the beer industry. The gender bias seemed persistent until a few years back. But not anymore. Women these days are drinking beer and in fact many breweries say that their strong beer and stout drinkers are women. India is also seeing female beer brewers get to the job. Indian beer companies are opening their arms to female employees. From Brewers to shift engineers women are making a comeback like never before.

Alia Hussain who works as a Shift Engineer at United Breweries Ltd when asked how it feels to be working in a beer company as a woman said, “It feels great to be a part of such a renowned organisation where I get equal opportunities to learn and grow. At UBL, I get to demonstrate my creativity and passion for engineering every day, by coming up with solutions that are innovative and out of the box and that enable me to put my technical skills to use. This has helped me drive value for the company and grow my career as well.”

Alia Hussain, Shift Engineer, United Breweries Ltd.

Alia, an electrical engineer wanted to be a part of an industry where she could put her skills into practice and the beer industry was the perfect domain.

As a shift engineer at the UBL she ensures that production lines run smoothly without any breakdowns. This is done by building a preventive maintenance model for all the equipment, deploying  those measures, conducting  post-deployment analysis of how effective the model has been and taking corrective actions accordingly. Another key aspect of her role is to ensure optimum power consumption at the  brewery and mitigate any losses. Alia also looks after sourcing and procurement of spare parts for the machinery at the brewery which has always been the job of men.

Jaanvi Kaushik, a Brewer Trainee at UBL whose primary profile is to experiment with recipes and formulate different varieties of beer for the Indian market is a Brewing and Distilling Post-Graduate from Heriot-Watt University who chose to enter the beer industry for her passion towards brewing and applications. “My mother, like the most conventional parent, wanted me to become a doctor but my dad was very ecstatic about my career choice and believed in me. The people here have not treated me any different. They are very supportive and encourage women to break their inhibitions. Hence, women shouldn’t worry about joining the beer industry.”

    Jaanvi Kaushik, Brewer Trainee, UBL.

“My aim is to revolutionize the drinking culture in India. Today, I can tell the difference between a good beer and a not so good one because I work in this industry. But for everyone else it’s just another alcoholic beverage. Unlike Scotch and whiskey, where people develop the taste and know the nuances of the drink, the knowledge around beer is comparatively limited. Before anyone picks up a glass of a stout or a different style of beer, they should know what to expect,” she added when asked about her aspirations.

“I have multiple roles and tasks to fulfil. First and foremost, my job is to take stock of the manpower at the brewery and supervise their work. Secondly, I need to ensure that whatever has been planned on the production line for the day is carried out smoothly. Additionally, if there are any breakdowns, I need to attend to them to ensure lesser downtimes in production. Over and above this, my role also includes mapping out a predictive maintenance model for all equipment and machines, and deploying those measures periodically, as well as upskilling and re-skilling the workforce at the brewery,” says Neha Nanaiah, Shift Engineer, United Breweries Ltd and a single parent kid.

“As a student, I was fascinated about how beer was brewed and the science that went behind it. In fact it’s not just a science but I think it is art as well to craft the perfect beer. I personally think that one needn’t have any sort of negative perceptions about working in a beer company. While there may have been certain social taboos associated with women working in this industry in the past, I think times have changed and working in the beer industry, especially with a market leader, is as exciting, and presents you with brilliant growth opportunities,” she adds.

Neha Nanaiah, Shift Engineer, United Breweries Ltd.

When asked how she copes up with the competition in an industry dominated by men specially in the technical side of work space Neha said, “There are two important aspects that I personally keep in mind. Firstly, it is important for me as a woman to not have any notions that this is primarily a man’s job and that as a woman, I’m not meant to be in a domain like this. It’s important for us women to break that barrier and cultivate a mindset that we can choose any field of our choice and that we are equally capable. It’s only when you have that mindset can you really break the glass ceiling. When I chose industrial engineering and management as a course, a lot of people advised me to take up another stream because they felt that women don’t have a lot of scope for growth in such domains. However, I was determined to pursue a degree in this field and prove people wrong. So when I got the job offer from UBL, I immediately took it up.”

“Secondly, I made sure that I arm myself with knowledge.  I’m constantly driven by the quest to learn.  I love asking questions and fortunately UBL has enabled an environment where everyone can share their opinions and express freely. So I would say a positive mindset along with the knowledge of your job and what it entails, and the desire to learn continuously has helped me accomplish significant strides in my current role. Today, I feel like a valued employee at UBL and enjoy a great rapport with my team members and managers, she added.

Well, with all the work these women do, they also have hobbies and interests that they are passionate about. Alia enjoys cooking, Neha enjoys theatre and Jaanvi is a trained classical dancer and a yoga practitioner. They also love to drink beer.
