Karnataka is strengthening its position as one of India’s fastest-growing hubs for alcohol beverage manufacturing and brewing innovation, with industry leaders and policymakers pushing for a more sustainable brewing and inclusive growth model.

The discussion took centre stage at a recent industry conclave in Bengaluru, where brewers, distillers, sustainability experts, technology providers, and government officials came together to explore the future of Karnataka's alco-bev industry.

A major talking point was Karnataka’s ongoing excise and regulatory reforms. Karnataka’s Hon’ble Excise Minister Shri R B Timmapur stated that the government has introduced multiple reforms over the past year to improve ease of doing business for breweries and distilleries. The reforms include simplified label approvals, streamlined MRP updation systems, technology-enabled compliance mechanisms, and annual licence renewal reforms. The government also reiterated its commitment to long-term policy stability till 2030 to encourage investments into brewing infrastructure, manufacturing expansion, and technology-led operations. The Minister further revealed that Karnataka generates nearly ₹40,000 crore annually through excise revenue, highlighting the economic significance of the alco-bev sector in the state.

The conclave also highlighted the importance of inclusive growth. Shivkumar Eashwaran emphasised that the growth of the alco-bev sector must benefit farmers and rural communities alongside manufacturers and breweries. He noted that raw materials such as barley, grains, fruits, and agricultural produce should increasingly be sourced locally from Karnataka farmers to strengthen rural livelihoods and local supply chains. The conversation comes at a time when India’s premium beer and craft spirits market is witnessing rapid expansion. Industry experts believe local sourcing and stronger agricultural integration could help reduce import dependence while supporting long-term industrial development.

A major focus of the conclave was sustainability. Speaking at the event, Shri Shivkumar Eashwaran, Chairman of the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Chairman of Canadian Crystalline Water India Limited, stated that sustainability and resource optimisation will define the future of brewing and distillation in India. According to him, breweries and distilleries must increasingly adopt water conservation, wastewater recycling, energy efficiency, and circular economy practices as part of their operational models. Industry stakeholders believe Karnataka has the potential to emerge as a globally benchmarked sustainable brewing ecosystem.

Alongside manufacturing growth, Karnataka is also exploring opportunities in alcohol tourism and brewery-led experiences. With Bengaluru already recognised for its strong craft beer culture, industry stakeholders believe brewery tourism and immersive alco-bev experiences could emerge as important growth drivers for the hospitality and tourism sectors.

The conclave additionally highlighted Karnataka’s potential to become a manufacturing hub for brewing equipment and allied technologies. Industry leaders called for stronger collaboration between government, academia, and manufacturers to drive innovation, automation, research, and skill development within the brewing ecosystem.

The event also recognised excellence within India’s craft brewing industry, with American Brew Works receiving the Best Brewer Award, while Kling Brewery and Oasis were recognised for their beer line-ups. Industry experts observed that India’s craft beer and premium spirits segment is entering a transformative phase, with Indian brands increasingly gaining international visibility and export opportunities.

The conclave concluded with a collective call for stronger collaboration between government, manufacturers, sustainable brewing experts, and technology providers to build a globally competitive and environmentally responsible alco-bev ecosystem in Karnataka.
