Bangalore’s craft beer scene has come a long way over the last decade. Every craft brewery enters Bangalore’s market with a different proposition. What started as a handful of pioneering brewpubs has evolved into one of India’s most dynamic craft beer markets. Today, breweries are competing not just on quality, but on creativity, experience, and identity. In a landscape filled with hop bombs, experimental one-offs, and increasingly crowded tap lists, standing out is no easy task.

KLING Brewery, located on the ever-bustling Church Street, has chosen a different path. Instead of chasing extremes, it has built its identity around a single idea: balance.

Not balance as a compromise, but as a brewing philosophy.

In a market where breweries are often trying to outdo each other with the next big flavour trend, that’s a surprisingly refreshing place to start.

A Brewing Philosophy That Goes Beyond the Buzzwords

Unlike many emerging craft breweries, KLING Brewery’s balance isn’t a marketing phrase tucked away in a presentation deck. It is a principle that guides what happens inside the brewhouse every day.

Leading that vision is Head Brewer Aadithya Eashwaran, a Heriot-Watt University graduate whose approach to brewing is rooted in one simple belief: every beer demands its own relationship with tradition and experimentation.

The answer, according to him, changes with every style, and for a growing craft brewery, consistency becomes critical.

For beers like the Bernstein Hefeweizen and the Scottish Wee Heavy, tradition takes the lead. These styles have survived generations for a reason, and brewing them well requires restraint, precision, and respect for what makes them timeless. On the other hand, styles like the Milkshake IPA open the door to experimentation. Here, creativity plays a larger role, allowing the brewery to explore texture, flavour, and character while still maintaining balance.

Perhaps the best example of KLING’s philosophy is its Belgian Tripel brewed with jaggery. It takes a style deeply rooted in European brewing tradition and introduces an ingredient that feels unmistakably Indian. The result is not a gimmick or a novelty beer. Instead, it feels like a conversation between two brewing cultures.

As Aadithya explains:

“Every beer needs its own balance. Some styles demand tradition, some need experimentation—but the real craft lies in knowing how much of each to use. That’s what makes a beer complete.”

And that’s what makes KLING interesting. There is no one-size-fits-all approach inside the brewhouse. Every recipe begins with a conversation about what the beer needs, not what the latest trend cycle demands.

A Beer Portfolio Designed for Drinkability

A lot of craft breweries in Bangalore offer variety. Sometimes, too much variety.

You often come across tap lists packed with styles that feel disconnected from one another, each beer trying to make a louder statement than the last. At KLING Brewery, the lineup feels different. Despite the diversity of styles, there is a common thread running through every pour: drinkability. Spend a little time at the bar, and you’ll notice something interesting. Guests aren’t gravitating towards just one flagship beer. Different styles seem to find their own audience, which is often a sign of a well-rounded brewing programme rather than a brewery relying on a single crowd favourite.

The current lineup includes a Bernstein Hefeweizen, Belgian Tripel with Jaggery, Milkshake IPA, Scottish Wee Heavy, English Milk Stout, and a Seasonal Mango Ale. On paper, these beers couldn’t be more different. Yet they feel connected by the same philosophy.

The Hefeweizen delivers the familiar softness and refreshing character expected from the style. The Milk Stout brings richness without becoming heavy. The Seasonal Mango Ale offers fruit-forward flavour without crossing into sweetness overload.

Even the more expressive beers remain approachable.

That is perhaps KLING’s biggest strength. The beers are bold enough to be memorable, but never so extreme that they become difficult to enjoy. In today’s Bangalore craft beer scene, that’s a surprisingly rare balance to strike.

Craft Brewery, bangalore brewery, hidden brewery, church street, after office party, weekend plans, things to do this weekend, district, zomato, swiggy,

The Technology Behind the Consistency of a Craft Brewery

Of course, brewing philosophies are easy to talk about. Delivering them consistently is a different challenge altogether.

That’s where KLING’s technical foundation comes into play.

Every successful craft brewery eventually reaches a point where philosophy has to be supported by process. The brewery operates on a 10HL brewhouse supported by six fermenters, with a system designed to provide precise control across every stage of production. From mash temperatures and extraction efficiency to fermentation management and final conditioning, the emphasis is on repeatability.

Temperature, flow rates, timing, and fermentation conditions are carefully monitored throughout the brewing process. On the cold side, advanced temperature-controlled fermenters and conditioning tanks help maintain consistency in flavour, aroma, and clarity. For a growing craft brewery in Bangalore, consistency is often what separates potential from longevity.

KLING’s investment in process control reflects a larger ambition. The goal isn’t simply to brew great beer once. It’s to brew great beer every single time.

Building a Craft Brewery Brand for the Long Run

While the beer remains the heart of the business, KLING’s ambitions stretch beyond a single Church Street location. The challenge for any growing craft brewery is scaling without losing the character that made people care in the first place.

The brand is already looking towards expansion through flagship microbrewery outlets in key cities, while laying the groundwork for commercial production, bottling, and wider distribution in the future. It’s an ambitious roadmap, but one that feels aligned with how KLING has approached everything else so far.

The focus isn’t on growing quickly for the sake of growth. It’s on building a craft beer brand that can scale without losing what made people notice it in the first place. That mindset becomes increasingly important as the Indian craft beer industry matures. Consumers today are looking beyond novelty. They’re looking for brands that know who they are, what they stand for, and what they consistently deliver.

Finding Its Place in Bangalore’s Craft Beer Scene

For all the conversations around innovation, technology, and expansion, KLING’s story ultimately comes back to something much simpler.

Balance.

Balance between tradition and experimentation. Between creativity and control. Between brewing beers that excite people and brewing beers they genuinely want to order again. It sounds straightforward on paper, but anyone who has spent time around a brewhouse knows it’s one of the hardest things to get right. For a young craft brewery carving out its place in Bangalore’s highly competitive craft beer market, that commitment to balance may well be its biggest advantage.

And for beer lovers walking into this Church Street brewery, that’s exactly what makes KLING worth paying attention to.

Geist Brewing Co. Becomes First Indian Brewery to Win at the European Beer Star Awards 2024

Bangalore, December 2024: Geist Brewing Co. a pioneering name in the Indian craft beer sector, proudly announces that its Franconia-style Smoked Wheat Beer, Geist Rauch-a-Fella, has been awarded the Silver Award in the Smoke Beer category at the renowned European Beer Star 2024. This groundbreaking achievement marks the first time an Indian brewery has been recognised at this prestigious competition since its inception in 2004.

The European Beer Star, held annually in Nuremberg, Germany, is one of the most respected beer competitions in the world. It celebrates beers that are authentic, full of character, and true to traditional European brewing styles. This year, the competition saw 2,360 entries from over 50 countries across 75 categories, judged by 150 international beer experts in a rigorous two-day blind tasting. Beers are evaluated solely on sensory qualities such as appearance, aroma, taste, and style adherence, ensuring the winners are truly exceptional, with only 1 Gold, 1 Silver, and 1 Bronze awarded in each of the 75 categories, making this a highly competitive platform.

Inspired by the renowned smoked beers of Bamberg, Germany, Geist Rauch-a-Fella is a Franconia-style smoked wheat beer brewed with Bavarian beechwood-smoked barley malt and traditional wheat malt, combined with the fruity-spicy aromatics of classic Weissbier yeast. This hazy, light amber ale delivers a harmonious balance of smoky flavour, toasty malt character, and refreshing drinkability, with an ABV of 5.4%. Geist Rauch-a-Fella’s authentic interpretation of a Rauchweizen impressed the international panel of judges, earning it a Silver Award in the Smoke Beer category—a remarkable achievement for an Indian craft brewery competing on a global platform.

Since the start of the European Beer Star in 2004, our competition has focused on beer styles of European origin. However, breweries from all over the world can take part, regardless of whether they are large international breweries or small brewpubs around the corner. With entries from over 50 countries, the European Beer Star is also one of the most international beer competitions. Winning an award at this competition shows that you are at the top of the world in terms of beer quality,” says Stefan Stang from the organising association Private Brauereien.

Commenting on this honourable award, CEO & Co-founder of Geist Brewing Co. Narayan Manepally says: This win is a landmark moment for the Indian craft beer industry, showcasing the global potential of Indian breweries. The awards are known for their stringent evaluation process, making this accomplishment a testament to the growing quality and creativity in Indian craft brewing. To be recognised on such a prestigious platform is a testament to the dedication and passion of our team and the journey we’ve undertaken since 2006. This milestone reinforces our belief that Indian craft beer has the potential to stand among the best in the world.

As we inch closer towards the end of September, a major celebration approaches where brewers brew their beers and prepare the communities around the world for the annual event by decorating their cities with the blue and white checkered flag. Yes, we’re talking about the Oktoberfest. As we all know, Oktoberfest takes place in Munich – the heart of Bavaria. But hey, if you can’t make it to Munich this year for the most celebrated beer festival, there are still plenty of beer options from home that mirror (at least in taste) that voyage across the continents.

Lucky for you, we had some time on our hands to round up some of the popular breweries in Bangalore to get drunk and grab a Bavarian-style pretzel along with a schnitzel. So put on your lederhosen and grab your stein, here are 11 breweries to experience Oktoberfest in Bangalore.

Toit

Toit, one of the city’s favorite watering holes – loved by beer-guzzlers and frequented by all, has a hefty beer line-up for this year’s Oktoberfest. Along with the usual Märzen, the brewpub in Bangalore features a Munich Dunkel, Doppelbock, Schwarzbier and a Pilsner. If you haven’t tried any of these styles before, now is the time to savor them. It goes without saying that all of these beers will feature an Oktoberfest food menu which features Chicken Schnitzel, Sausage Schwarzen Platter and plenty more to soak up all those festbiers!

Windmills

The brewing artists at Windmills brewpub in Bangalore have carefully curated a line-up that teleports you to the Bavarian tents. Although slightly higher in strength, the Märzen at Windmills is toasty and bready-rich with a clean and smooth finish. To top it up, Märzen will be accompanied by a Pilsner, Hefeweizen and an intriguing Smoked Weizen.

Geist Brewing Co.

On the occasion of Oktoberfest, Geist, South India’s first distribution craft brewery has brewed something special this year. A new limited release Festbier joins their familiar German beer line-up which includes Uncle Dunkel (Bavarian-style Dark Wheat), Rauch-A-Fella (Franconia-style Smoked Wheat), German Lager (Märzen) and Weiss Guy (Weissbier). Geist’s Festbier was tapped at the recently concluded Oktoberfest in Bhartiya City, Bengaluru! To take it a notch above, the brewery has now announced ‘Geistoberfest’ across all their outlets to unpack a whole lot of fun, featuring some of the finest handcrafted brews. To go alongside their German brews, Geist has also curated a food menu along with pairing suggestions.

The Pump House

Get ‘Tastefully Wasted’ at The Pump House with their Oktoberfest Fare. South Bangalore’s most popular microbrewery, The Pump House is all set to ring in this year’s Oktoberfest tradition in flair by pouring two limited edition lagers, Märzen and Rauchbier. The Märzen here is unlike anything. It has been lagered for a good five months to emphasize more on malty-rich characteristics by keeping it clean as a lager.

Red Rhino Craft Brewery

From traditional beers which trace back their roots to Bavaria, to the live bands and German fare, Red Rhino’s Oktoberfest will make you appreciate the German roots! This year, the German beer list at Red Rhino features four styles. A Märzen, Kölsch, Schwarzbier and a Hefeweizen. To make it even better and keep it authentic, the rooftop microbrewery has curated a special food menu which features some of the finest culinary delights of Germany.

Arbor Brewing Company

Touted as India’s first American Craft Brewery, Arbor, is a craft beer pioneer in spreading true beer culture across India one pint at a time. For this year’s Oktoberfest, Arbor has brewed a Märzen and unlike the traditional German lager, this one’s a little twisted by packing in more hop punch. Check it out!

Aurum Brew Works

Aurum Brew Works, Sarjapur, Bangalore, is bringing in the flavor of Bavaria with three new beers in their line-up brewed exclusively for Oktoberfest. Märzen, a clean, malty German lager with rich, toasty and bready flavors. Rauchbier and Hefeweizen join the line-up to make it even more worthwhile. Not just this, an Aurum’s Oktoberfest entertainment carnival is also being organized at the brewery throughout the festival. The entire place will be buzzing with live performances, contests, relays and a lot more.

Seven Rivers Brewing Co.

The word “local” creates a powerful impression. There’s always a certain pride we bear when we support brands and businesses that are crafted with nativity at the core. And that’s probably why it’s such a marvelous time for craft beer lovers in Bangalore right now as Seven Rivers Brewing Co. is all set to launch Festbier, a German lager as an ode to the Oktoberfest. Sit tight and follow @sevenriversbrewing for further updates on Oktoberfest.

The Bier Library

The Bier Library has geared up to relive the beer-drenched history of the world’s largest folk festival by brewing up an authentic German lager. Unlike the majority of the microbreweries, The Bier Library has brewed an Oktoberfest Lager which is paler, lighter and much easier to drink than its German brethren Märzen. As always, it is accompanied by Some of the German delicacies such as Schnitzels, Knackwurst, Bratwurst, Frankfurter Kranz etc.

Biergarten Brewery

Famously known for its airy, al-fresco setup that offers the perfect view to match with Bangalore’s welcoming weather, Biergarten has had a significant role to play in upping Bangalore’s status as the Craft Beer Capital of India. And, to bring in the spirit of Oktoberfest, Biergarten has tapped Märzen across its outlets in Bangalore. What are you waiting for? Sit back, grab a cold stein and let your fest commence!

HopsHaus

Often described as a ‘botanical beer garden’ – HopsHaus is a picturesque venue for hosting Oktoberfest. It’s an inebriant oasis for beer lovers thirsting for an authentic ‘beer garden’ experience. For this year’s fest, HopsHaus has tapped Rauchbier, a smoked German lager which is smoky, bready and toasty and just about right to get you into the Oktoberfest spirit.

Last month, Geist Brewing Co., one of the Beer Capital’s first and most cherished craft beer brands, launched their super swanky crowlers in a brand new avatar. A design change that never looked so good. All four of their crowler variants got a makeover where labels have been designed from the ground up.

Just like the craft beer business, labeling art and design have experienced massive changes in India over the past several years. It has also inspired brewers and marketers to put more thought (and money) into the look and feel of their beers’ packaging, rather than just the beer itself. In fact, design has more effect on the end product than most drinkers realize. At their best, craft beer labels are thoughtful and thought-provoking, catchy and beautiful. They have the ability to story-tell a consumer by portraying imaginative translations of the beer that’s inside the bottle, can or a crowler in this case. Now that Geist has rolled out an eye-catching beer label, we had the desire to look behind the curtain at the people involved: creators, artists or designers and understand what goes into designing a beer label. Read further to find out how Geist pulled it off!

Geist’s first set of crowlers

Geist collaborated with Illustrator Vinayak Varma right from their early days. Along with the branding, Vinayak had also worked on designing the first set of crowler labels. The designs have always been vibrant and catchy with a piece of story attached to them. For instance, if you look at Geist’s logo, there’s a red paint brush-like stroke that represents the handcrafted artistic work that goes behind every variant of their beer. Identical to that, every crowler label has been conceptualized and illustrated with a purpose in mind.

The Makeover

In early 2021,  when Geist was planning to launch their first set of crowlers, they had a short window to get the designs out. They were created at short notice, and weren’t quite as refined as the current ones. Typically, the entire design process would’ve taken a few months to conceptualize but pandemic didn’t leave the brand enough room to think over many design elements that would’ve added more aesthetics to the product. On the bright side, Vinayak had all the time in the world for newer sets of crowlers. He had more time to sketch templates, visualize distinct characters, select color palettes and styles for each of the labels, while keeping the Geist logo front and center.

Beer labels are a canvas for a brand to portray their story. A story that describes the distinctiveness of a product or has an anchor to depict imaginative translations. With a new design, Geist has brought in a central character for every variant to imply a unique personality by striking a good balance between artistic experimentation and consistency across labels. Going the extra mile has always been the hallmark of distinction at Geist and this time, the brand deserves an applause for a crowler overhaul.

It is well known all over the world that Aussies love beer, beaches and barbecues. Among them, beer, or rather craft beer in Australia is putting the country’s biggest hop growers in high demand. With over 400 craft breweries, hop usage has significantly increased and the majority of the hop farms which lie in Victoria and Tasmania are expanding to keep up with the demand. One of the largest hop producers in Australia, Ellerslie hops, is a 4th generation owned grower and importer of hops that has been offering some of the exquisite hops to the industry for a very long time.

The flavor spectrum of hops can be classified as fruity, floral, spicy or woody. Those grown in Australia tend to be much fruitier than other hops produced elsewhere, making them well-loved in the United States. The citrus aromatics that they can impart to IPAs, pale ales and other hoppy beers made in Australia, distinguish them from what is already offered in the United States. With hops such as Super Pride, derived from Pride of Ringwood, that imparts a combination of resin and fruity aromas, Ellerslie hops has got them all.

Whole Cone Hops

Ellerslie also offers a selection of hops such as Astra™ & Melba™ which are their trademarked variants that have resulted from Ellerslie Breeding Program. Both of these hops are unique and clearly stand apart from the American hops. At Ellerslie, large portions of the property are dedicated to hop varieties like Pride of Ringwood, Super Pride and Australian Cluster, which make up for the majority of the local demand. Adhering to the craft beer market, Ellerslie has seen the demand for new experimental hops which are suitable for hoppy ales such as Juicy IPAs, Pale Ales, XPAs etc. This resulted in creation of their own breeding program which gave rise to Melba™ and Astra™, that have caught the attention of craft brewers.

Ellerslie

More recently, Ellerslie have expanded their market reach to India due to the demand for Australian grown hops. Alchemy Brewpub in Bangalore was the first microbrewery to brew with these Aussie hops in India and we interviewed Nate Ross, who is the Head Brewer at Alchemy, to understand his perspective on brewing with new hops. “Have you brewed with Ellerslie hops before? If yes, how has your experience been so far?”, we asked Nate. “I was very fortunate to have the Ellerslie team in Melbourne airfreight four different varietals over to India for us to brew with and showcase these hops in Bangalore for the first time. The three beers brewed included a Pilsner with Aus. Cluster, an Aussie Pale Ale with Super Pride and Aus. Cluster, and a Hazy IPA with Astra & Melba. I was very happy with the results and had great feedback from brewers and beer lovers.” explains Nate while sipping an Aussie Pale Ale on a cracking hot afternoon. In all honesty, one beer that clearly stood out among the others brewed with Ellerslie hops was the Aussie Pale Ale. It’s a hoppy pale ale showcasing Ellerslie Hop Estate grown Super Pride and Cluster harvested from their own farm in Victoria, Australia. It has pithy grapefruit, pine and resinous hop character balance with a clean and smooth malt profile and gentle lingering bitterness. “Alchemy is excited to be the first brewpub to brew with these new hops in India!” says Nate.

Evaluating A New Hop

There are numerous ways to evaluate a new hop. Many brewers often have their own ways to unearth the sensory profile by either sniffing it, brewing a hop tea or they just get on with it and brew a SMaSH (Single Malt and Single Hop) recipe. “My favorite way to evaluate new hops is just to go for it and brew a batch of beer with them! My approach is to choose a style that I think will be suitable after doing an initial sensory of the hops and formulate a recipe accordingly”, says Nate. He goes on to add that SMaSH beer is a great way to allow the hop to shine through without anything else getting in the way. It’s also a brilliant educational tool for brewers and beer drinkers to try something new and get a better understanding of the hop.

Nate Ross, Head Brewer, Alchemy Bangalore

“I’ve been really impressed with the freshness of the hops as these are sourced directly from the Ellerslie farm and not through any other channels and it really shows as soon as the bag is ripped open.” – Nate Ross, Head Brewer, Alchemy Bangalore

As mentioned before, Australian hops pack a lot of punchy aromas that outshine the other regional hops. We asked Nate to tell us how distinctive were the hops from Ellerslie when compared to other leading distributors across the world? “I’ve been really impressed with the freshness of the hops as these are sourced directly from the Ellerslie farm and not through any other channels and it really shows as soon as the bag is ripped open. Super Pride is such a clean bittering hop but also shows great dual-purpose potential. Aus. Cluster has a profile that absolutely sings in modern lager styles. Astra and Melba are proprietary hops from Ellerslie’s breeding program that deliver new world tropical fruit notes, and I’m particularly enjoying the white wine fruity profile from Astra. I have a number of recipe ideas already for that hop!”

Hazy IPA a.k.a Paper Yacht IPA brewed with Astra™ and Melba™ hops at Alchemy Bangalore

Thanks to the folks at Alchemy, craft beer enthusiasts of Bangalore can now relish Australian hopped beers as they plan to airfreight Ellersie hops straight from the 2022 harvest. Speaking of Hop Harvest, there’s one beer that has never been brewed in India before, which is an Harvest IPA. This is something that’s quite common in North America where fresh hops or wet hops are tossed into the beer sourced straight from the farm after the harvest. “Do you plan on brewing a Harvest IPA with fresh hops anytime soon in India?” We asked Nate to see if there’s a possibility. “Unfortunately, we are not allowed to import whole hop flowers into India, but how cool would that be to brew with them! Perhaps when I next return home to Australia I can plan a visit around the annual hop harvest and have an opportunity to brew a fresh hop beer with a local brewery. Fingers crossed!” signs off the Aussie brewer.

Ellerslie hops are exclusively available in India through Brew Essentials. To know more about Ellerslie hop varieties, head over to their website www.ehe.com.au/hop-varieties
